A different Kind of Poker
Hey Gang,
This Sunday I embarked on the coldest game of Poker I've ever played. No, it wasn't an icy stare from a calculating card hording opponent - it was the ECMTB Poker Run.
ECMTB is 'East Coast Mountain Biking', a group of local biking enthusiasts, and Poker, is well.. Poker.
What does Poker have to do with Biking you might ask? Well, Follow my short 12 step Program to find out!
1. Wake on Sunday morning to tune up Kristin's bike. Yours is now officially 'broken' :(
2. Wonder if the boys will make fun of you for Riding a GIRLS bike. Figure 'nah' - the spandex pants will distract them from the bike.
3. Drive to the Dartmouth 'Spider Lake' trail to register for the race
4. Get out of vehicle, realize it's -14, and that biking in the winter is for idiots and go home (just kidding... about going home)
5. Wait until 11am, when the race starts. Follow a series of well-marked loops, on a great, well-ridden and hard-packed snowy trail. At various checkpoints along the route, greet volunteer who is anxiously waiting with a deck of cards.
6. Exchange courtesies with said volunteer. Draw a playing card from said deck.
7. Bike to next volunteer, and draw yet another card.
8. Repeat steps 6 through 7 until 5 cards have been accumulated. You now have a full poker hand!!
9. Evaluate said poker hand. If determined to be acceptable, continue to finish line, if not, discard one card, and continue biking along the trail to obtain a new card. 3 discards are allowed.
10. After a total of no more than 8 cards have been collected, return to the finish, regardless of how crappy your Poker hand is.
11. Submit crappy poker hand to the officials. Put bike away, and get in the car to thaw.
12. Attend the award ceremonies. Determine you don't have the best hand, win a door prize anyway.
I am living proof that this 12 Step Program WORKS!
Here are some pics of my first ever Poker Run.
Not the Card I was looking for...
Funny, but not me.
Me accepting my Award*..... Or, me laughing at the guy above.
*door prize
Now, Off to Monday Night Hockey!!!
